APR Energy Completes 90 Megawatts Temporary Power Plant in Costa Rica
APR Energy completes installation and commissioning of it's latest "Fast Track" project.
APR Energy LLC has recently completed the installation and commissioning of a fast track temporary power solution for Instituto Costarricense De Electricidad (ICE) in Costa Rica. The 90MW power plant is located in Barranca on the North West coast of Costa Rica about 60 miles from San Jose.
The ever increasing demand for electricity coupled with the lack of new permanent power plants coming online, ICE, Costa Rica’s Electrical Utility, identified a need for a temporary power solution. The power plant will operate for 18 months in parallel with the existing grid providing additional electricity as and when necessary.
Other contributors to the electricity shortages in Costa Rica are the economic growth, the strong tourism industry and in particular the climatic conditions. The country is 75% dependent upon Hydro-Electric power and as such, a particularly dry season can have massive implications on reservoir water levels and the delivered kWhrs from these power plants.
APR’s comprehensive temporary power solution was delivered on a turnkey basis, with APR being responsible for all civil, electrical and mechanical work on site. The scope included 80,000 gallons of fuel storage, two 34.5kV substations to connect into the ICE system and all metering and protection equipment to ensure reliable operation in conjunction with ICE’s dispatch center.
One of APR’s operational philosophies is to ensure the effective and efficient use of local resources. In Barranca, the majority of the installation work was completed by local subcontractors and local manpower will also be trained to support the ongoing operation and maintenance activities.
